Balmain
A village on a peninsula.
Balmain sits on a peninsula between Darling Harbour and Iron Cove, ten minutes by ferry from Circular Quay. Its streets run from the Darling Street ridge down to the water on both sides, and most of the housing stock is Victorian: sandstone cottages, workers' terraces and the grander Italianate houses along the eastern end.
The suburb has kept its village scale. Darling Street is the spine, with pubs, bakeries and the Saturday market at St Andrew's, and the side streets are quiet enough that children still ride bikes on them.
