A village on a peninsula.
Balmain sits on a peninsula between Darling Harbour and Iron Cove, ten minutes by ferry from Circular Quay. Its streets run from the Darling Street ridge down to the water on both sides, and most of the housing stock is Victorian: sandstone cottages, workers' terraces and the grander Italianate houses along the eastern end.

Birchgrove is the tip of the Balmain peninsula, a small suburb of narrow streets and water on three sides. Louisa Road runs along the ridge to Yurulbin Point with harbour views both ways, and the rest of the suburb steps down through federation houses and terraces to the oval and the wharf.

Rozelle sits between Balmain and Lilyfield, with Victoria Road through its middle and Iron Cove to the west. The housing mix is broader than Balmain's: workers' terraces on the eastern streets, freestanding federation homes near Easton Park, and a stock of converted warehouses and newer apartments along the old industrial edge.

Lilyfield wraps around Callan Park and the Bay Run's southern shore. It is a suburb of federation bungalows, weatherboard cottages and a growing number of architect-designed rebuilds on wide blocks, with the light rail along its southern edge.

Annandale was laid out as a planned suburb in the 1870s and it still reads that way: a grid of straight streets running north from Parramatta Road to Rozelle Bay, lined with Victorian terraces and, along Johnston Street, some of the Inner West's most ornate Italianate houses.

Leichhardt is the largest of the six suburbs and the most varied. Norton Street's Italian restaurants and the Italian Forum anchor the centre, and the streets around it run from small Victorian cottages to wide federation semis and bungalows towards Haberfield.
